The Pokhara Valley, at the foot of the Annapurna mountain range, is an ideal destination in Nepal for those seeking peace and adventure. Enjoy Lake Phewa, take a boat trip or visit the Peace Stupa. Pokhara is also the starting point for trekking routes such as the Annapurna Circuit and Poon Hill, and offers adventure activities such as paragliding and walks to waterfalls and caves.

The Terai in southern Nepal is a unique travel destination, featuring vast plains, tropical jungles and rich biodiversity. Visit national parks such as Chitwan and Bardia for safaris and spot rare animals such as tigers, rhinos and elephants. The national parks in southern Nepal offer a fascinating glimpse into the country’s rich biodiversity. Chitwan National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is renowned for its one-horned rhinos, Bengal tigers and safari tours on foot, by jeep or by canoe. In Bardia National Park, a lesser-visited paradise, you can spot tigers in their natural habitat and enjoy an unspoilt jungle experience. Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is a paradise for birdwatchers, with over 400 species of migratory birds and a unique chance to see the endangered water buffalo. SuklaPhanta National Park, with its vast grasslands, is home to the world’s largest herds of swamp deer and offers a secluded and serene experience. Each park has its own unique ecosystem and adventure, making the Terai a must-visit region for nature lovers and adventurers.
Chitwan National Park, Nepal’s first national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers a unique safari experience in a tropical lowland setting. Here you can admire the iconic one-horned rhinoceros, Bengal tigers and Asian elephants in their natural habitat. The park offers adventurous activities such as jeep safaris, jungle treks and canoe trips on the Rapti River. With its rich biodiversity and access to local Tharu culture, Chitwan is an ideal destination for both nature and culture enthusiasts.

Bardia National Park, situated in the far west of Nepal, is a lesser-known gem offering some of the best chances to spot Bengal tigers. The park provides an unspoilt wilderness experience, with dense forests, winding rivers and an abundance of wildlife, including elephants, leopards and rare freshwater crocodiles. Thanks to its remote location, Bardia is ideal for travellers seeking tranquillity and authentic jungle adventures, with opportunities for guided walks and rubber-raft safaris.

Shukla Phanta National Park, in the far south-west of Nepal, is renowned for its vast grasslands and the world’s largest herds of swamp deer. The park offers an unspoilt and peaceful setting, where you can spot wild elephants, tigers and countless bird species. The grasslands and wetlands are perfect for walking and jeep safaris. For travellers seeking a remote and less-visited destination, Shukla Phanta offers a unique opportunity to experience Nepal’s unspoilt nature.

Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is a paradise for birdwatchers and an important stopover for migratory birds in South Asia. Located in eastern Nepal, it is home to over 400 bird species and rare animals such as the wild water buffalo. The reserve offers a peaceful experience, with safaris by boat or on foot through wetlands, lakes and rivers. Koshi Tappu is a must-visit for nature lovers who appreciate serene landscapes and unique flora and fauna.

Thorough preparation and realistic expectations are essential for a successful trip to Nepal. This beautiful country offers unique experiences, but also presents challenges, such as changeable weather conditions, diverse cultures and, at times, basic facilities. By doing your research in advance, you can make the most of everything Nepal has to offer. In this section, you’ll find practical information to help you plan your trip, from what to pack to what to expect during treks or in remote areas. With the right knowledge, your adventure in Nepal doesn’t just begin on arrival, but right from the preparation stage!
A tourist visa is required for all visitors from the Netherlands and Belgium. You can arrange this online via an e-Visa or apply for it on arrival in Kathmandu. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months to avoid any issues at the border.
The best time to visit Nepal depends on what you want to experience. Autumn, from September to November, is known for its clear skies and is ideal for trekking. In spring, from February to April, the valleys are in bloom and the weather is mild. The monsoon season, from June to August, brings plenty of rain but ensures lush green landscapes. In winter, from December to February, it is colder, especially in the mountains, but it is quieter and less crowded on popular routes.
It is important to get vaccinated before travelling to Nepal. Recommended vaccinations include DTP, hepatitis A and B, Japanese encephalitis and typhoid. Drink only bottled or filtered water and take a small first-aid kit with you containing basic essentials. This will ensure you are well prepared for any minor ailments during your trip.
Nepal is generally a safe destination, but be vigilant in crowded areas and watch out for traffic. Follow the local rules in national parks and on trekking routes, and check for the latest safety advice in earthquake-prone areas.
The Nepalese rupee (NPR) is the local currency. Cash is useful for small payments and at local markets, whilst large hotels and some restaurants also accept credit cards. Outside the major cities, the use of debit cards is limited. You cannot obtain NPR from a bank in Belgium or the Netherlands, but you can exchange money upon arrival in Kathmandu, at the airport or near your hotel.
On our tours, you will usually travel in a private car with a driver. This is safe and also gives you some flexibility during the often long journeys. Domestic flights are efficient for longer distances, such as from Kathmandu to Pokhara, or are necessary, for example to Lukla. Tourist buses and minibuses connect towns and villages, although comfort levels can vary greatly. Taxis are affordable, but agree on a price in advance.
Accommodation in Nepal ranges from budget guesthouses to luxury hotels in cities and tourist areas. During treks, lodges are often simple but charming and cosy. In the high season, particularly in autumn and spring, it is advisable to book accommodation in advance.
Nepalese cuisine is rich and varied. Local dishes such as dal bhat, momo and thukpa are highly recommended. To ensure your meal is safe, it is best to choose busy restaurants or stay with host families. Drink only bottled water and avoid ice that does not come from a reliable source.
Communications in Nepal are well organised in cities and tourist areas. SIM cards are readily available from Nepal Telecom and Ncell, and Wi-Fi is available in hotels, cafés and many lodges. However, coverage may be limited in remote areas and high mountains.
The official language is Nepali, but English is widely spoken in tourist areas. It is important to respect local customs. In temples and monasteries, it is customary to take off your shoes and wear modest clothing. Always ask permission before taking photographs of people.
When packing, it’s a good idea to bring light clothing for the cities and warm layers for the mountains. Sturdy walking boots are essential for trekking routes, along with a rucksack, sleeping bag, water bottle, sun cream and sunglasses.
Nepal offers a wide range of activities and attractions. Trekking routes such as the Mardi Himal, Pikey Peak and Poon Hill with Muldai Peak offer spectacular views and a unique cultural experience. National parks such as Chitwan and Bardia are perfect for safaris and spotting wildlife such as tigers, rhinos and elephants. For adventure seekers, there are opportunities to go paragliding in Pokhara, rafting on the Trisuli River or hiking to impressive waterfalls and caves.
