Highlights

During this trek, you’ll hike through the impressive Langtang Valley, a region known for its varied landscapes, traditional mountain villages, and spectacular views of the Himalayas. You’ll explore a less touristy area with a rich culture, where you’ll meet the hospitable Tamang and Sherpa people. From the charming mountain village of Kyanjin Gompa, you can optionally admire the views from Kyanjin Ri or Tsergo Ri—both offering breathtaking panoramic vistas. This trek combines nature, adventure, and culture into a well-balanced trekking experience, ideal for those seeking an authentic slice of Nepal.

Day-to-day

Day-to-day

This Langtang trek through the Langtang Valley is perfect for travelers who want to discover the beauty of the Himalayas without the crowds or physical demands of more strenuous treks. You’ll hike at your own pace along well-maintained trails, through forests, past glacial rivers, and toward impressive mountain vistas. Along the way, you’ll stay in welcoming lodges and experience the rich culture of the Tamang people. Altitude is built up gradually, and rest days or shorter stages are possible. Ideal for those who like to stay active and appreciate comfort while traveling.

  • Day 1: Adventurous drive to Syabrubesi (1,503 m) by jeep

Today you’ll set off on a road trip to the starting point of your trek in Syabrubesi.
You’ll drive up over the mountain ridges as you leave the Kathmandu Valley. You’ll have a magnificent view of the Annapurna range to the west, but you’ll also see Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, and, of course, the snow-capped peaks of the Langtang range. Along the way, you’ll see beautiful scenery: rivers, slopes covered in terraced fields, and picturesque villages.
Before reaching Dunche, you’ll drive through the lively town of Trisuli. You’ll continue on to Syabrubesi, where you’ll spend the night.

  • Day 2: Trek to Lama Hotel (2,470 m)

After breakfast in Syabrubesi, your trek begins along the Bhote Kosi River, which flows down through the Himalayas from nearby Tibet.
You’ll first follow the paved main street. After crossing a suspension bridge over the Langtang River, you’ll hike through subtropical forests and then climb the trail through oak and rhododendron forests. Be sure to look carefully in the trees for langur monkeys, as well as unique wildlife such as martens and wild boars. If you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of the rare red panda.
The trail to the Lama Hotel is steep at first, but then climbs more gently until you reach the Lama Hotel.

  • Day 3: Trek to Langtang Village (3,430 m)

Today you start your day with a climb through a forest: at times it feels like a semi-jungle, with ferns and orchids growing on the trees. Every now and then, Langtang Lirung peeks out from between the trees! At Ghora Tabela, you leave the forest behind and can enjoy stunning snow-capped mountain peaks on both sides of the valley.
You continue climbing gently upward as the valley widens. You’ll pass a few temporary settlements: this is where the herders stay while they graze their herds on the green alpine meadows in the summer. There’s a good chance you’ll spot some yaks here!
Finally, you continue on to the Langtang Valley, where the village of Langtang is located. Both Tamangs and Tibetans live here.
The old village of Langtang was completely wiped off the map by the 2015 earthquake. The village has since been rebuilt 100 meters above the ruins of the old one. This new location is safer than the old one. It is still close to cliffs, but vertical cliffs are less susceptible to avalanches.
You’ll spend the night in one of the newly built teahouses, helping the local community recoup their investments from recent years.

  • Day 4: Trekking to Kyanjin Gompa (3870m)

After a half-hour walk, you’ll first reach the village of Mundu. From there, you’ll gradually climb upward through green yak pastures. It’s remarkable how expansive the view is here in the valley—and right in the middle of the mountains!
After crossing several small streams and moraines, you’ll arrive in Kyanjin. This village is home not only to a small Tibetan monastery but also to a cheese factory! There’s no better place to eat and drink!
In the afternoon, you’ll have time to relax: take a look around the village or explore the area. If you still have enough energy, hike to Langshisha Kharka and enjoy the breathtaking views there.

  • Day 5: Rest day at Kyanjin Gompa – Hike to Kyanjin Ri or Tsergo Ri

Today is a rest day, so you’ll have time to rest and relax. If you took it easy yesterday, you can visit the monastery or the cheese factory today. If you’re feeling up to it, you can hike on the moraine to enjoy the stunning views of the ice walls and glaciers of Langtang Lirung.
If you really want to hike today, head to Kyanjin Ri (4,773 m), just behind the village. From this point, you’ll have a 360-degree panoramic view of the beautiful Langtang mountain range with its snow-capped peaks. It’s best to set out early for your hike to Kyanjin Ri: the views are clearest in the morning.
An even more strenuous alternative is climbing to Tsergo Ri (4,884 m). From here, you’ll have a spectacular view of Langtang Lirung, the Langtang Mountains, Kinshung, Yansa Tsenji, and the foot of the great Lirung Glacier. After lunch, you may want to take a walk in the Kyanjin Valley.

After breakfast, you’ll start your hike. You’ll follow the same path you took before: through the valley, you’ll first follow the Langtang Khola River to Mundu, Langtang, and then Ghora Tabela.
You’ll make faster progress than during the ascent, and even though the trail is the same, the views are different. Take the time today to enjoy the lush green forests and the view of the snow-capped peaks of Langtang.
You’ll have lunch along the way and continue down the trail until you reach Lama Hotel again. This protected area is one of the most pristine valleys in Nepal.

Today is your last day of hiking, during which you’ll walk to the end point in Dhunche.
You’ll hike from the village of Syabru, passing through villages, across fields, and over a ridge, gradually descending. From the village of Brabel, you’ll have a stunning view of Ganesh Himal.
You’ll continue hiking, facing a steep descent along a stream and the mountainside, starting from the village of Braccaka. At the end of the descent, you’ll cross a suspension bridge.
The trek ends with an ascent through the forest, away from the Trisuli River. Did you know that the water from this river comes from the sacred lake of Gosainkund? You’ll climb until you reach Dhunche.

Overnight stays

Overnight stays

During this trek, you’ll spend the night in simple but charming lodges (teahouses) run by local families. Each lodge offers a warm welcome, often with a wood-burning stove in the common area where you can meet other hikers or relax with a cup of hot tea.

The rooms are basic but comfortable: they usually have two single beds with mattresses, blankets, and a pillow. During the colder months, we recommend bringing your own sleeping bag for extra warmth. The bathrooms are shared and vary by lodge—sometimes a hot shower is available (for a small additional fee), and sometimes only cold water.

Pratical

Pratical

The Langtang trek through the Langtang Valley is one of the most accessible and atmospheric treks in Nepal, making it particularly suitable for active travellers aged 55 and over and families with children. You’ll walk through a picturesque valley alongside mountain slopes dotted with rhododendrons, bamboo forests and authentic villages of the Tamang people. Along the way, you’ll enjoy impressive views of the snow-capped peaks of the Langtang range, including Langtang Lirung. This trek combines natural beauty with culture and is also slightly less crowded than the better-known routes. On this page, you’ll find answers to the most frequently asked questions, so you can start your adventure well prepared.

  • How difficult is the Langtang trek?

The Langtang Valley trek is a moderate hike, ideal for active people aged 55 and over and fit families. The daily walking time varies between 4 and 6 hours. The highest point is around 3,800 metres (Kyanjin Gompa), which means that, technically speaking, this trek is not overly difficult, but a good level of fitness is important.

  • When is the best time of year to go on this trek?

The best times to visit are spring and autumn: March to May and October to November. During these months, the weather is stable and clear, offering the best views of the mountains. In spring, the rhododendrons are in bloom.

  • Where do you stay overnight during the Langtang trek?

You’ll be staying in simple but comfortable teahouses, run by local families. The rooms are usually basic, with a bed and a blanket; some have an en-suite bathroom, but shared facilities are more common. The communal areas are cosy and heated.

  • How do you arrange the permits for this trek?

For this trek, you will need a TIMS card and a Langtang National Park permit. We will arrange these for you in advance, so you don’t need to do anything yourself.

  • Is there mobile coverage or Wi-Fi on the way?

There is sometimes mobile coverage in the lower parts of the route, but it is limited further up. Some lodges offer Wi-Fi for a fee, but it is not reliable everywhere. It is advisable to view this as a ‘digital detox’.

  • Do I have to carry my own luggage?

No, we’ll provide a porter to carry your luggage in a large waterproof duffel bag. All you need to carry yourself is a light daypack with water, snacks, sun cream and your camera.

  • Is there a risk of altitude sickness?

Although the highest point remains below 4,000 metres, there is always a slight risk of altitude sickness. The route is designed to be gradual and includes an acclimatisation day in Kyanjin Gompa, which significantly reduces the risk.

  • Can I go on this trip with minor joint problems?

The paths are easy to walk on, but do include some changes in elevation and steps. Sturdy walking shoes, walking sticks and, if necessary, knee braces are strongly recommended. If you’re unsure, please feel free to consult us or your doctor.

  • Is this trek suitable for children?

Yes, children aged around 8 and over who are in good physical condition and up for an adventure will find this trek well within their capabilities. The route is safe, the daily distances are manageable, and there is plenty to discover along the way.

  • What makes this trek unique compared to other popular routes?

The Langtang Valley trek offers the perfect blend of nature, culture and mountain scenery, without the crowds found on the Everest or Annapurna treks. The Tamang culture, the views of the Langtang Himal, and the warm hospitality along the way make it a unique experience.

  • Can I combine the Langtang trek with other routes?

Yes, this trek can easily be combined with, for example, the Tamang Heritage Trek or the Gosaikunda Trek for those who wish to spend a little longer on the trail. We would be happy to put together a tailor-made itinerary for you.

  • How safe is the Langtang trek?

The Langtang trek is considered a safe route, even for older travellers and families. You’ll be accompanied by an experienced local guide who knows the area well, knows what to do in an emergency, and will keep a close eye on your health at all times. The trails are well-marked, there are no technical sections, and you’ll spend each night in villages with basic facilities. Good travel insurance that covers mountain trekking is essential.
