Day-to-day

Day-to-day

On this trip, you’ll discover Nepal’s diverse history, culture and natural beauty, with a focus on the rich heritage of the Kathmandu Valley. From the impressive temples in Kathmandu, the serene views in Nagarkot, the ancient Newari towns of Bhaktapur and Patan, to the peaceful surroundings of Nagarkot – every day offers new experiences you won’t soon forget.

On this page, you’ll find an overview of the daily itineraries that await you. Whether you’re wandering through Old Kathmandu, admiring breathtaking views of the Himalayas in Nagarkot, or experiencing the unique culture of the ancient Newari towns, each day has been carefully planned to help you make the most of your time in Nepal.

  • Day 1 – Arrival in Nepal & an introduction to Kathmandu

    Namaste and welcome to Nepal!
Upon arrival at Kathmandu Airport, one of our staff members will be there to welcome you. You’ll recognise them by the sign bearing our logo. After a warm welcome, they’ll take you by private car to your hotel in the heart of the city and help you check in.

After some time to freshen up, you’ll set off on your first exploratory tour of Kathmandu’s old town with a local guide. You’ll stroll through the lively streets of Asan, a historic district where a colourful market takes place every day and where you’ll come across a temple or stupa on almost every corner. The scent of incense and spices fills the air as you walk past old wooden facades and hidden courtyards.

Your visit ends at the impressive Basantapur Durbar Square, Kathmandu’s royal square. Once the residence of the Malla kings, this square is now an open-air museum of Newar architecture and a powerful symbol of the cultural richness of the Kathmandu Valley.

  • Day 2: Cultural highlights of Kathmandu

Today, you’ll explore the cultural highlights of the bustling Kathmandu Valley with your guide. This day is all about spirituality, ancient rituals and impressive monuments listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

You start at Pashupatinath, Nepal’s holiest Hindu complex. Although the temple itself is only accessible to Hindus, from the opposite bank of the river you can witness a remarkable ritual: the public cremations that take place here every day. Amidst the serene chaos along the Bagmati River, you’ll see pilgrims, rituals and holy men – the colourful saddhus – who devote their lives to the god Shiva.

Next, you’ll visit Boudhanath, Nepal’s largest stupa and the heart of the Tibetan community in the Kathmandu Valley. The immense white dome with the all-seeing eyes of Buddha is surrounded by prayer wheels, prayer flags and small shops where monks and pilgrims make their rounds. The atmosphere is intense and soothing at the same time – a place that stimulates the senses.

After lunch, head to the western side of the valley, where the iconic Swayambunath stupa stands proudly on a green hill. The climb up 300 steps, under the watchful eye of curious monkeys, takes you to a mystical place filled with statues, flags, prayer wheels and panoramic views over Kathmandu. It’s no wonder this place is also known as the ‘Monkey Temple’.

Alternatively, you can round off the day with a visit to the old city centre of Kathmandu, around Durbar Square, where ancient palaces and temples serve as a reminder of the valley’s royal past.

  • Day 3: From Kathmandu to the hills of Nagarkot via Dulikhel and Sanga

After a hearty breakfast, you’ll bid farewell to bustling Kathmandu and head east out of the valley with your private driver and guide. The first stop is Dhulikhel, a charming Newari town that has played an important role for centuries on the ancient trade route between Nepal and Tibet.

Together with your guide, you’ll stroll through the historic centre, where traditional Newari houses with wood carvings, small temples and open squares have been built in harmony with ancient Hindu urban planning principles. On a clear day, you’ll be treated to one of the most beautiful views in Nepal: the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas seem to float above the mist.

On the way to Nagarkot, you’ll stop in Sanga, where Nepal’s largest statue of Shiva towers proudly over the landscape. The impressive Kailashnath Mahadev is 44 metres high and took seven years to build. It’s a special place to pause and reflect on the spiritual significance of Shiva for many Nepalese people.

By late afternoon, you’ll arrive in Nagarkot, a village situated at an altitude of 2,200 metres. Nagarkot is renowned for its panoramic views of the Himalayas, particularly at sunrise and sunset. Here, you can go for a short walk in the surrounding area or simply relax on your hotel’s terrace and enjoy the fresh mountain air and the views.

  • Day 4: Authentic Nepal: from Nagarkot via Sankhu and Changu Narayan to Bhaktapur

After a peaceful morning in the mountain village of Nagarkot, you’ll start the day with a short drive to Sankhu, an ancient Newari settlement on the edge of the Kathmandu Valley. Sankhu still exudes a medieval atmosphere: with its narrow alleys, traditional houses, temples and retirement homes, it feels as though time has stood still here. The town is nicknamed Shankharapur, after its unique shell-shaped layout, and is also known for its sacred caves where, according to legend, eighty siddhas (wise ascetics) once resided.

Together with your guide, you will also discover the Vajrayogini Temple, beautifully situated on the green slopes of the sacred Manichuda Mountain. This 17th-century temple is dedicated to the tantric goddess Vajrayogini and is surrounded by statues and shrines.

After your visit, you will travel on to Changu Narayan, the oldest Hindu temple complex in the Kathmandu Valley. This peaceful sanctuary is situated on a ridge and offers sweeping views of the surrounding area. The temple is dedicated to Vishnu and is renowned for its exquisite wood and copperwork: a masterpiece of Newari craftsmanship.

You’ll round off the day in Bhaktapur, Nepal’s best-preserved medieval royal city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In this largely traffic-free city centre, you can wander amongst temples, small squares and craftspeople. Bhaktapur is famous for its pottery: in various squares, you’ll see thousands of earthenware pots drying in the sun – a picturesque sight. The lively atmosphere, authentic architecture and crafts make Bhaktapur a highlight of your trip.

  • Day 5: Hidden gems of the Kathmandu Valley: Bungamati, Kirtipur and the royal city of Patan

Today you’ll discover some of the best-kept secrets of the Kathmandu Valley. In the traditional Newari villages of Khokana and Bungamati, you’ll feel as though you’ve travelled back in time. Street life is still very much alive here: women weave, children play in the small squares, and men work with wood or chat with neighbours in the sun. In Bungamati, you’ll visit the temple of Rato Machhendranath, an important deity for both Hindus and Buddhists.

Your driver will then take you to Kirtipur, a hidden hilltop town to the south-west of Kathmandu. Although this ancient town is less frequently visited, it is steeped in history and culture. You will walk with your guide past the Chilancho Stupa, the Tri Ratna Temple Complex, and the royal quarter of Dev Pukku with its picturesque pond and ancient palace. The Bagh Bhairab Temple and the Uma Maheshwar Temple are also real highlights – from here you have a magnificent view over the valley.

To round off the day, you’ll visit the royal city of Patan, also known as Lalitpur. This charming city is renowned for its impressive Newari architecture, magnificent temples and centuries-old crafts. You’ll visit Durbar Square with the Royal Palace, the stone-built Krishna Mandir, and the Golden Temple complex. The city is also famous for its metalworkers and sculptors – along the way, you’ll see artisans at work on statues, jewellery or singing bowls.

A day filled with culture, history, and traditional crafts—perfect for travelers who want to experience the real Nepal.

  • Day 6: Last moments in the Kathmandu Valley & transfer to the airport

Today is your last day in Nepal, but depending on your flight, you’ll still have some free time to enjoy the tranquility and charm of the Kathmandu Valley.

For example, visit the elegant Garden of Dreams, a neoclassical garden in the heart of Kathmandu where you can escape the hustle and bustle of the city for a while. Or take a taxi to Baber Mahal Revisited, a stylish complex housed in a former palace where you’ll find charming shops, art galleries, and cafés—the perfect place to pick up that one-of-a-kind souvenir.

You will be picked up from your hotel in Patan well in advance of your international flight. The drive to the airport takes about 30 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic. Be sure to arrive at the airport at least three hours before departure.

Do you have a late flight? If so, feel free to leave your luggage at the hotel front desk and spend some extra time in the city.

We hope you look back on your special journey through the Kathmandu Valley with a head full of memories and a heart full of impressions. Namaste, and see you soon!
