Our Favorite Places for Family Adventures in Nepal
Experienced with Our Own Daughter
Nepal with kids: Our Three Favorite Places
As the founders of Nepal Inside Out, we have come to know Nepal in a particular way over the years. Not only as travel professionals, but as parents.
Our daughter is almost nine years old and has been travelling with us since she was a baby. Together we have explored jungles, slept in tents, wandered through villages and discovered some of Nepal’s most special corners. Those experiences have taught us that travelling with children is not about ticking off as many sights as possible. It is about wonder, adventure, nature and the memories you make together.
There are many family-friendly destinations in Nepal, but some places we keep coming back to. Not just because we love them ourselves, but because our daughter finds new adventures there every single time.
These are three of our absolute favourites.

Sapana Lodge: Where the Jungle Comes Alive
Sapana Lodge holds a very special place in our hearts.
We have visited several times and no two trips have been the same. One visit was all about spotting rhinos on safari. Another centred on the quiet thrill of a canoe trip along the river. And sometimes it was the encounters with local children in the nearby village that left the deepest impression.
What makes Sapana Lodge so special for us is that children experience so much more than just wildlife. They get a real glimpse of everyday life in rural Nepal and discover how people live in a completely different environment.
For our daughter, the boat trips along the Rapti River remain among her favourite memories from any trip. Drifting quietly through the jungle while scanning the banks for birds, crocodiles and perhaps a rhino is something that never loses its magic.
One of the things that makes Sapana Village Lodge truly stand out is its connection to rescued elephants. The lodge provides a safe home for elephants that have come from difficult circumstances, giving families the rare opportunity to get to know these extraordinary animals in a respectful and ethical way.
During our visits, our daughter was captivated by the elephants every single time. Guests can join activities like preparing food for the elephants or enjoying a meal in their company. Unlike traditional elephant activities, the focus here is on education, care and observation rather than performance.
The elephants spend much of their time in the grasslands behind the lodge, where they are free to roam. This creates plenty of opportunities to watch them in their natural behaviour. For children, seeing these gentle giants up close while learning about their care and protection is an experience that stays with them long after they get home.
For our daughter, the elephant encounters have become a highlight of every visit. Even weeks after we return, they are usually the first thing she talks about when she thinks back to our time in Chitwan.
On our most recent trip we also discovered a wonderful new addition: a beautiful swimming pool. After a warm day of safaris and adventures, it was without question our daughter’s favourite spot at the lodge. While we enjoyed the peaceful surroundings and the view, she could have spent hours there. For families with children, it makes the stay even better, combining adventure and relaxation in exactly the right balance.
Why we recommend Sapana Lodge to families
– Safaris in nearby Chitwan National Park
– Boat trips along the Rapti or Narayani River
– Getting to know local culture on foot or by bicycle
– Meeting rescued elephants, preparing their food and walking or having breakfast alongside them
– A beautiful pool to unwind after an adventurous day
– Exceptional wildlife experiences
– A warm, genuinely child-friendly atmosphere
Personal tip from our family: if your children love animals, we recommend staying at least three nights. That gives you enough time to take in both the jungle activities and the elephant encounters without feeling rushed. For our daughter, this was without doubt one of the most memorable experiences Nepal has ever given her.

Himalika Camp: Sleeping Under the Stars
Children love adventure, and that is exactly why we keep coming back to Himalika Camp.
The first time we visited, our daughter was hooked within the hour. Sleeping in a safari tent felt to her like going on a real expedition. Years later, that feeling has not faded.
What we appreciate as parents is that Himalika Camp lets children experience nature in a safe and unhurried way. They can walk through the forest, watch birds, discover insects and, most importantly, just be children.
We notice every time how quickly children slow down here. Without screens and constant stimulation, curiosity comes back. They start asking questions, noticing small things and creating their own adventures.
For children who want a bit more action, there is plenty of that too. One of the things our daughter loved most was swimming and playing in the river. On warm days it is a wonderful way to cool down and enjoy the surroundings at the same time.
Himalika Camp also offers activities you would not easily expect so close to Kathmandu. Children can try kayaking in a safe, playful setting under the guidance of experienced instructors. For families looking for a shared adventure, family-friendly rafting trips are also available. It is a great way to introduce children to water sports without it feeling too intense or overwhelming.
And then there is the food. Every meal comes as a generous buffet of healthy, organic dishes that always seem to go down well with even the most selective young eaters.
Why we recommend Himalika Camp to families
– A unique glamping experience
– Sleeping in comfortable safari tents
– Swimming and playing in the river
– Introduction to kayaking with qualified guidance
– Family-friendly rafting experiences
– Safe and immersive nature experiences for children
– Healthy, organic meals with plenty of variety
Personal tip from our family: Himalika Camp is one of the places in Nepal where we felt most comfortable letting our daughter try adventurous water activities. The owners are genuinely child-focused and safety is clearly a priority, with two safety boats accompanying every rafting trip. Our daughter also loved kayaking with lifelines and giving SUP a go under supervision.

Namobuddha Resort: Space, Calm and the Real Nepal
Not every adventure needs to be full of action.
Some of the best memories come from slowing down. That is why we love coming back to Namobuddha Resort as a family.
When we need a break from the pace of Kathmandu, this is often where we head. The peaceful surroundings, fresh mountain air and open countryside make it easy to arrive and feel immediately settled.
What we find particularly special here is the way children get a natural, unforced introduction to real Nepali village life. On walks in the area you regularly come across buffaloes, goats and farmers working in their fields. For many children from Western countries, this is an entirely different world. Our daughter finds it fascinating every time, watching how people live and work in ways so different from what she knows at home.
The resort itself is very family-friendly. There is a swing and a large trampoline where children can burn off energy while parents enjoy the views and the quiet. For our daughter, the trampoline is reliably the first place she heads to the moment we arrive.
The accommodation is made up of cosy cottages spread across the grounds, which gives the whole place a relaxed, intimate feel, as though you are staying somewhere private in the middle of nature.
And then there are the views. On clear days you are rewarded with a panoramic sweep of the Himalaya. We have had several mornings here where the snow-capped peaks emerged slowly in the early light, the kind of moment that quiets even the most energetic children.
Close by is also the sacred Buddhist pilgrimage site of Namobuddha. A visit to the monastery, the colourful prayer flags and the monks makes the stay not only restorative but genuinely enriching in a cultural sense too.
Why we recommend Namobuddha Resort to families
– Experience authentic Nepali village life
– Encounters with buffaloes, goats and local farmers
– A swing and large trampoline for children
– Cosy cottages set in green, open surroundings
– Panoramic Himalaya views on clear days
– Lovely walks through villages and countryside
– A visit to the famous Namobuddha monastery
– A genuinely peaceful setting for the whole family
Personal tip from our family: stay at least two nights at Namobuddha Resort. That gives you time to settle in, enjoy the grounds and the views at your own pace, and still have a full day to explore the monastery and the surrounding walks and villages. It is genuinely a place that rewards slowing down.

What Travelling with Our Daughter Has Taught Us
After nearly nine years of exploring Nepal with our daughter, we have learned something that we keep coming back to:
Children rarely remember the luxury of a hotel room or the perfect execution of a trip. They remember the experiences.
The rhino that appeared out of nowhere during a safari.
Sleeping in a tent.
The puppy they played with in a village.
The bright colours of prayer flags.
Making candies for the elephants.
The freedom to explore.
Rafting on the Trisuli River.
Those are the moments that stay.
One of the reasons we founded Nepal Inside Out is because we want to help travellers experience the real Nepal. Not just the well-known highlights, but the quieter, more personal places where you connect with nature, culture and people.
Travelling with our daughter has only strengthened that conviction. Children see the world differently. They notice details that adults overlook and make connections with people easily. That gives them a completely unique way of experiencing Nepal.
Our Recommendation for Families
If you are planning a trip to Nepal with children, we recommend building an itinerary that combines different kinds of experiences:
– Wildlife, local culture and adventure at Sapana Village Lodge
– Swimming in the river and sleeping in nature at Himalika Camp
– Calm, space and cultural richness at Namobuddha Resort
Together, these three destinations show how varied Nepal really is, and they give children the chance to discover, learn and build memories that will stay with them.
They are places we come back to ourselves, time and again, and that we recommend to other families with genuine enthusiasm.
Nepal is not only a destination for trekkers and adventurers. It is also a place where children can discover, be curious and grow.
Our daughter has made some of her most treasured memories here. We would love to help your family make memories like these too.
